There are plenty of 'heavyweight' tools such as XmlSpy, which are good for prodding around in xml docs - but often (very often in some cases!) you just want to quickly open and browse an xml doc, and have it pretty printed. Possibly with some basic search functionality (textual is probably fine).

I usually use a browser such as IE of Firefox for this, but they tend to break down for larger file sizes (I'm often opening files in the 10s of MBs or more).

I have some ideas about how such a viewer might be implemented, so I'm sure there must be something out there that can do it, but my google-fu is letting me down.

So I thought I'd put it to the hive-mind that is SO to lead the way.

I like the viewer of Total Commander because it only loads the text you actually see and so is very fast. Of course, it is just a text/hex viewer, so it won't format your XML, but you can use a basic text search.

I have tried dozens of XML editors hoping to find one which would be able to do some kind of visualization. The best lightweight viewer Exe reader for mac. for windows I have found was XMLMarker - too bad the project has been dead for some years now. It is not so useful as an editor, but it does a good job of displaying flat XML data as tables.

There are tons of free editors that do XML syntax highlighting, including vim, emacs, scite, eclipse (J2EE edition), jedit, notepad++.

For heavyweight XML features, like XPath support, XSLT editing and debugging, SOAP/WSDL there are some good commercial tools like, XMLSpy, Oxygen, StylusStudio.

JEdit is open-source and also has plugins for XML, XPath and XSLT.

Word-2003 is fairly good for visualizing (but don't use it for editing). Excel-2003 and up also does a good job at visualizing flat XML data and can apply XSL transformations (again, no good as an editor).

http://www.firstobject.com/dn_editor.htm is so far the best and lightest editor available with handful of utilities. I recommend using it - tried with up to 400 MB of files and more than a million records :)

These capabilities allow developers to use data from office documents together with validation and transformations (using XSLT or XQuery) to other file formats. Validation is done using the latest ECMA-376 XML Schemas.[55]
  • RIMBlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 SP4 (4.1.4) supports Office Open XML file formats.[56]

Planned and beta software[edit]

  • Apache POI will support Office Open XML in the forthcoming 3.5 release, currently still in Beta[41]
  • SoftMaker's Presentations (part of SoftMaker Office) will support Office Open XML presentation documents in upcoming versions.[59]
  • Unified Office Format (UOF) Open Source Translator is being developed by Beihang University and partners to convert from Office Open XML to UOF and vice versa.[60]

Search tools[edit]

  • Google supports searching in content of DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files and also searching for these filetypes. Found files can be viewed directly in a converted HTML view.[72]
  • Apple Spotlight supports indexed searching of Office Open XML files.
  • Copernic Desktop Search for Windows supports indexed searching of Office Open XML files.[73]

ISO/IEC 29500:2008 / ECMA-376 2nd edition implementations[edit]

LibreOffice[edit]

LibreOffice has built-in support for importing and exporting Office Open XML files in ISO/IEC 29500 standard.[74]

Microsoft Office 2016[edit]

Microsoft Office 2016 continues to use the strict ISO version.[75]

Microsoft Office 2010[edit]

  • In 2008, Microsoft stated that Microsoft Office 2010 would be the first version of Microsoft Office to support ISO/IEC 29500.[76] The official release of this version of the product reads and writes files conformant to ISO/IEC 29500 Transitional, and reads files conformant to ISO/IEC 29500 Strict.[77]

Microsoft Office 2007[edit]

Microsoft Xml Reader Downloads

  • On July 28, 2008 Murray Sargent, a software development engineer in the Microsoft Office team confirmed that Word 2007 will have a service pack release that enables it to read and write ISO standard OOXML files.[78] However, as of Service Pack 2 (released 2009) Microsoft is not claiming Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility with the ISO OOXML standard.[76]

Open XML Format SDK[edit]

  • Microsoft Open XML Format SDK[79] contains a set of managed code libraries to create and manipulate Office Open XML files programmatically. Version 1.0 was released on June 10, 2008[80] and incorporates the changes made to the Office Open XML specification made during the current ISO/IEC standardization process.[81] Version 2 of the Open XML SDK supports validating Office Open XML documents against the Office Open XML schema, as well as searching in Office Open XML documents.[81] On March 13, 2008 Doug Mahugh, a senior product manager at Microsoft specializing in Office client interoperability and the Open XML file formats, confirmed that version 1.0 of the Open XML Format SDK 'will definitely be 100% compliant with the final ISO/IEC 29500 spec, including the changes accepted at the BRM'.[81] In a ComputerWorld interview from 2008, Doug Mahugh said that 'Microsoft would continue to update the SDK to make sure that applications built with it remained compliant with an Open XML standard as changes were made in the future'.[82] By June 2014, the Open XML SDK was at version 2.5[83] and had been released as open source on github[84]
